Jeffrey S. Monroe, MS, ATC

Head Athletic Trainer
Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Training, Sports Medicine, and Strength and Conditioning

Jeff Monroe has served as the head staff athletic trainer for Michigan State University Athletics since August, 1985. In the Fall of 2000, Jeff was delegated additional responsibilities as Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Training, Sports Medicine, and Strength/Conditioning Programs. Jeff completed his undergraduate bachelor's degree in physical education from The Ohio State University in 1972 while working as a student athletic trainer for four years. He attained his Masters degree from the University of North Dakota in conjunction with serving as the head athletic trainer in 1974. Jeff arrived at MSU after spending 11 years as an assistant athletic trainer for football and basketball at the University of Minnesota. At MSU, Jeff is personally assigned as the year round athletic trainer for the Spartan Football team. He presently holds an academic position in the Department of Kinesiology at MSU. Currently, Jeff is the President for the Michigan Athletic Trainers Society. He was previously the President-Elect for the Michigan Athletic Trainers Society. He also was the former Vice President for the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association in which he initiated a diversity recruitment program of athletic trainers and has overseen the student scholarship program. Jeff has performed several services to the Michigan Athletic Trainers Society and was honored in 1999 with the M.A.T.S. Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award. Jeff was inducted into the Minnesota Athletic Trainers Society Hall of Fame in the Summer of 2001. Jeff is actively involved as the Director of the annual Big Sky Athletic Training Sports Medicine Conference held yearly in Big Sky, Montana.


Sally Nogle, PhD, ATC

Associate Head Athletic Trainer

Sally NogleSally Nogle has served as a member of the Michigan State Athletic Training staff since October of 1983. Sally is the associate head athletic trainer working with the Spartan Football team. Sally is also the staff athletic trainer for the Men's and Women's Tennis teams, and Spartan Field Hockey Team. She was recognized in 2004 by receiving the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award. She has also received the Michigan Athletic Trainers’ Society Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award in 1999, the NATA Service Award in 1998,and the Michigan Athletic Trainers' Society Hall of Fame Award. In 2006, Sally was named a recipient of the Jack Breslin Outstanding Staff Award for Michigan State University. Most recently in April 2008, Sally was honored with the San Diego State University Robert J. Moore Distinguished Alumnus Award. Sally brings international and Olympic experience to the MSU staff. In 1984 Sally worked with Volleyball at the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and in 1985 and 1986 she worked at the U.S. Olympic Sports Festivals in Baton Rouge and Houston. Nogle was the athletic trainer for the U.S. Women’s basketball team at the 1987 World University Games in Yugoslavia. Sally was also selected to work with the U.S. Rowing Team at the Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea in 1988. She earned a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1979 and a master's degree in 1983, both from San Diego State University, and her Ph.D. from MSU in 2001. Her research focused on the mastery of the NATA's competencies and clinical proficiencies program. In addition to her sport responsibilities, Sally coordinates the mental health program for the student athletes, inventory of pharmaceutical supplies, and supervising the head-of-sport meetings for undergraduate student athletic trainers. Her family includes her husband Carlton, son, Bryce, and daughter, Tracy.


David Carrier, MA, ATC

David CarrierDavid Carrier is the staff athletic trainer serving the Spartan Hockey team. Dave arrived onto the East Lansing campus in 1984 from Ferris State University, where he had served as an assistant coordinator of sports medicine for five years. He received his bachelor of science degree in physical education from Ferris in 1979 and received his master's degree in athletic training from Central Michigan University in 1983. In 1990, he served as the head athletic trainer for the U.S.A. Hockey Team at the World Championships in Bern, Switzerland.Carrier with hockey player Dave spent four weeks working with ski jumpers and Nordic combine athletes at the 1992 Winter Olympics, and in 1988, served as head athletic trainer of the U.S.A. Olympic Hockey Team. He was a 1997 Michigan Athletic Trainer Distinguished Award winner and the NATA Research in Education Foundation Volunteer of the Year in 1998. Dave was inducted into the Michigan Athletic Trainer’s Society Hall of Fame in 2005 while accepting the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award in June, 2005. Dave coordinates the athletic training supply inventory, maintenance and budget issues for each of the six athletic training facilities.


Thomas Mackowiak, PhD, ATC

Thomas MackowiakThomas Mackowiak has been member of the Michigan State University athletic training staff since August, 1987. Tom is the current full-time staff athletic trainer with the Spartan Men's Basketball and women's golf programs. He received his undergraduate degree from Ball State University with a major in Special Education and a minor in Athletic Training. He completed his master's degree at Michigan State in 1981. Mackowiak with basketall player Tom served as the first head athletic trainer at East Lansing High School in 1980-1981. He is a former Michigan Athletic Trainers Society membership chairperson. Thomas is an adjunct instructor in the Department of Kinesiology at MSU. Tom also aids in the recruitment of graduate and undergraduate students while assisting with the education and proficiency development of the undergraduate student athletic trainers. Currently, he is a co-advisor for the MSU athletic training student organization E-STIM. Thomas completed his Doctorate Degree from Michigan State in December, 2005. His research was titled "An Evaluation of Planned Change: Accredited Undergradaute Athletic Training Educational Programs".


LouAnne Jefferson, MEd, ATC

LouAnne JeffersonLouAnne Jefferson serves as the certified athletic trainer for the Spartan Women's Basketball team. A native of Indianapolis, IN, Jefferson joined the Michigan State University athletic training staff in August, 1996 after two years as the head athletic trainer at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. LouAnne earned her Bachelor's degree from Purdue University and received her Master's from Temple University. Both degrees are in athletic training/sports medicine. In addition to her duties with women's basketball at MSU, LouAnne oversees men's golf and works with the insurance administration for all MSU student-athletes. She works with Dr. Tracey Covassin and the NATA as MSU's Clinical Instructor Educator (CIE) for the MSU 's undergraduate athletic training educational program. Since 2005, she has served as the sports medicine crew captain for the Michigan 3Day. The 3 day walk event involves over 3,000 participants annually raising over $4 million to fund and increase awareness, education, screening, and treatment for breast cancer. LouAnne is an Adjunct Faculty at MSU, a member of the NATA, GLATA, and MATS. She is also a longtime volunteer for the American Red Cross serving as First Aid, CPR, and AED Instructor.


Destiny Teachnor-Hauk, MS, ATC

Destiny Teachnor-HaukDestiny joined the Michigan State University athletic training staff in August, 1997. She is currently the staff athletic trainer in charge of MSU Women's Gymnastics, with clinical supervison of Softball and Baseball. Destiny is also responsible for yearly CPR certification of all Michigan State coaches and staff and student athletic trainers. Destiny earned her bachelor's degree in 1991 from Nazareth College and her master's degree from Western Michigan University. Prior to arriving in East Lansing, Destiny was an assistant athletic trainer at Washington University in St. Louis for two years. She then went on to be an assistant athletic trainer with football at Illinois State University in 1996. Destiny has also served as an athletic trainer for the ESPN Summer Extreme Games and is the Michigan Athletic Trainers Society representative to the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association Women in Athletic Training Committee. Destiny's family includes her husband Kalman, and sons Trey, Storm and Extreme and daughter Spirit.


Lianna Hadden, MS, ATC

Lianna HaddenLianna was hired at Michigan State University in the Fall, 2000, following a two-year athletic training graduate assistantship at Michigan State University. During her two year appointment, she worked directly with the MSU women's gymnastics and softball teams, while working as a teaching assistant in the Department of Kinesiology. Currently, Lianna coordinates the year-round health care for the Spartan women's volleyball program in addition to her athletic training student clinical supervision duties of men's and womens' cross country and track teams at the Jenison Field House athletic training room. She completed her undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University with a major in Exercise Science. Lianna is involved as a co-advisor for the MSU student athletic trainer organization E-STIM and is the Approved Clinical Instructor (ACI) as the evaluator for clinical proficiencies in MSU's undergraduate educational program. Lianna's family includes her husband Brian.


John Powell, PhD, ATC

Graduate Athletic Training Education and Research Program Director

John PowellDr. John Powell has served as a member of the Michigan State University Athletic Training full time staff since the Fall, 1999. Dr. Powell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and directs the graduate athletic training educational and research program. Dr. Powell was instrumental in researching and guiding the preparatory phase of the undergraduate educational athletic training program development at Michigan State University. He has an extensive background as a classroom instructor and lecturer for local, national, and international Physical Education, Health Education, and Sports Medicine symposiums. Dr. Powell is currently involved in extensive research in the area of injury prevention, sports injury epidemiology, and the biomechanics of lower extremity injuries. In addition to his teaching and research, he serves as Chair of the University Committee on Faculty Afffairs and is a seated member of the MSU Executive Committee of Academic Council, Faculty Council and Academic Council. Dr. Powell is a consistent professional reviewer for the Journal of Athletic Training, American Journal of Sports Medicine and Medicine and Science in Sport. He was named the 2000 recipient of the William G. Clancy Jr. M.D. Medal for Distinguished Athletic Training Research by fthe NATA Research and Education Foundation. Dr. Powell was name a 2005 recipient of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award. In 2006, he was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education. Dr. Powell earned his Bachelors of Science Degree from Michigan State University, his Masters of Science degree from Indiana University, and his Doctor of Philosophy from Penn State University.


Tracey Covassin, PhD, ATC

Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Program Director

Tracey CovassinDr. Tracey Covassin joined MSU's College of Education in the Fall 2005 from Shippensburg University, where she was an assistant professor of Exercise Science. Dr. Covassin serves as an assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology and as a certified athletic trainer within the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Her research focuses on neuropsychological impairments of concussions and epidemiology of sports injuries. She most recently served as the project coordinator of the Philadelphia Sports Concussion Project, and was a National Athletic Trainers Association Foundation Student Research Award Finalist in 2004. Dr. Covassin earned her PhD from Temple University in 2003. Presently, Dr. Covassin is involved as the Undergraduate Athletic Training Educational Program Director and oversees the sport of Field Hockey.


Brian Bratta, MS, ATC, CSCS

Undergraduate Athletic Training Clinical Coordinator

Brian was hired as the Clinical Coordinator for Undergraduate Athletic Training Education in the Fall, 2007. He works directly with Dr. Covassin on undergraduate athletic training education, placement, and clinical experiences for the undergraduate athletic training student. Brian oversees clinical supervision of men's and women's soccer, crew, dance and cheerleading. He completed his master's degree from Michigan State University in 2004 in conjunction with his clinical graduate assistant assignment at Lansing Everett High School. Following his graduate work, he worked as a Sports Medicine Team Leader at Ingham Regional Medical Center for two years coordinating and administering community outreach athletic training care. Brian completed his undergraduate degree from Augustana College with a BA in Biology and a minor in Sports Medicine in 2002.
