Sports Medicine Team Physicians
Michigan State University's student-athletes receive first class care from the Sports Medicine staff comprised of a team of certified athletic trainers, family practice physicians, orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine consultants, and sports medicine fellows.
The MSU philosophy is two-fold: to assist in preventing injuries through effective seasonal and research oriented programs and to facilitate an aggressive post injury/illness total body rehabilitation program for a timely return to competition. In all cases, the ultimate well-being of each individual is the top priority. Michigan State's aggressive and functional approach encompasses a wide array of consultants. Several programs include osteopathic manual medicine, exercise physiology, nutrition, biomechanical evaluations, clinical/sports psychology, sports psychiatry, and orthopedic surgeons.
Jeff Kovan, DO, Director of Sports Medicine
Serving as MSU's director of Sports Medicine and head team physician is Dr. Jeff Kovan. Dr. Kovan received his undergraduate degree from MSU in 1983 and his medical degree in 1987 from MSU's College of Osteopathic Medicine. Following his Internship at Botsford General Hospital, Dr. Kovan completed his Residency with St. Lawrence Family Practice. In 1991, he completed a Fellowship in Sports Medicine at Michigan State University. He worked at Western Michigan University's sports medicine department before returning to MSU in 1995 to direct the school's Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. Dr. Kovan is certified under the American Board of Family Practice. Primary sport responsibility is for men's and women's basketball and men's and women's golf.
Phil Greenman, DO, Osteopathic Medicine
Dr. Greenman spent nineteen years in private practice prior to arriving at MSU in 1972 into the College of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. Dr. Greenman's world wide expertise, research, teaching, and seminars in Osteopathic Medicine are devoted to manual medicine skills, muscle imbalance evaluations, pain control skills, and rehabilitation techniques throughout the world wide community. Dr. Greenman, who retired from MSU in 1998, continues his activity as a consultant.
Lynn Brumm, DO, Osteopathic Medicine
Dr. Brumm, Professor Emeritus in the College of Osteopathic Medicine, serves as a consultant in manual medicine injury situations for Michigan State University's Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Dr. Brumm is a member of the MSU's Department of Family and Community Medicine Program and the College of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. Dr. Brumm's national expertise involves muscle energy techniques, assessments, and hip/adductor somatic dysfunction treatments in athletes.
Douglas Dietzel, DO, Team Orthopedic Surgeon
Dr. Dietzel is a 1986 graduate of Ball State University with a B.S. in science with Pre-med and undergraduate minor in Athletic Training and became a certified ATC at that time. He then went to medical school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and graduated in 1991. During this time he worked with the Philadelphia Eagles Football organization. Internship and Residency were completed at St. John's Medical System in Detroit and Fellowship in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy at Michigan State University under the direction of Dr. Herb Ross. Dr. Dietzel had spent five years as part of MSU Sports medicine and team physician before leaving to go into private practice for the last three years. Dr. Dietzel has recently returned to MSU as Head Team Orthopedic Surgeon and Clinical Director of MSU Sports medicine with Dr. Jeff Kovan. He continues to serve as Board member of American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine, and a member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America.
Randy Pearson, MD, Team Physician

Dr. Pearson has been an associate professor in MSU's Department of Family Practice since 1994, has directed the MSU/St. Lawrence Hospital Family Practice Residency, and is currently senior associate director of Sparrow/MSU Family Practice Residency and Director of MSU's Sports Medicine Fellowship. He was appointed U.S.A. Team Physician for the 1999 World University Games and held the same position for the U.S.A. Men's Junior National Basketball Team Trials. A MSU team physician since 1986, Dr. Pearson currently oversees MSU's Football program as team physician.
Larry Nassar, DO, Team Physician
Dr. Nassar is an Assistant Professor in the College of Osteopathic Medicine, works in MSU's Health Team, and serves as the USA Gymnastics National Medical/Athlete Wellness Coordinator, while serving as the team physician for the USA women's olympic gymnastics team. Dr. Nassar completed his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, while receiving his medical degree from MSU's College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1993. He completed a Family Practice Residency at St. Lawrence Hospital in 1996, folowed by a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship in 1997. Several memberships of Dr. Nassar's include United States Gymnastics Federation, American Academy of Family Physicians, and the National Athletic Trainers Association. Dr. Nassar oversees the MSU women's gymnastics and crew programs in conjunction with treating a variety of intercollegiate athletes at Jenison Fieldhouse. His medical practice is specific for osteopathic manual medicine and primary care Sports Medicine.
Jennifer Gilmore, DO, Team Physician
Dr. Gilmore serves as an assistant professor in the Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine at MSU. Dr. Gilmore has received three degrees from MSU: a BA in Accounting, an MA in Exercise Physiology, and a DO from the College of Osteopathic Medicine. She was a resident at both the St. Lawrence Family Practice and Department of Osteopathic Medicine programs. Dr. Gilmore, on the MSU staff since the Fall 2000, currently assists with the MSU Hockey program as team physician and offers evalautive and manual manipulative skills to the MSU athletic population.
Robert Norris, MD Team Physician
Dr. Norris is currently working with the Volleyball team while working at MSU Olin Health Center. Born in Traverse City, Michigan, Dr. Norris attended Alma College with a double major in Biology and Chemistry, while competing in the intercollegiate basketball program. Bob graduated from the MSU College of Human Medicine in 1997, participated in the MSU/St. Lawrence Family Practice Residency from 1997-2000, and was the Chief Resident in 1999-2000. Dr. Norris oversees the MSU volleyball and hockey programs.
Mike Shingles, DO, Team Orthopedic Surgeon
Dr. Shingles received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and his medical degree from Michigan State University's College of Osteopathic Medicine. He also completed a Fellowship in Orthopedic Sports Medicine at Michigan State University. Dr. Shingles is Board Certified and serves as one of the Michigan State University Team Orthopedic Physicians. He is also the team physician for both East Lansing High School and the Lansing Lugnuts.
Andrew Schorfhaar, DO, Team Orthopedic Surgeon
Dr. Schorfhaar completed his undergradaute degree at Western Michigan University. He received his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Internship and Orthopaedic Surgical Residency were completed at Garden City Hospital in Garden City, MI. Dr. Schorfhaar completed a Fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine at the TRIA Orthopaedic Center in Minneapolis, MN. In addition to specializing in Knee and shoulder arthroscopy and reconstructive surgery, he also performs joint replacements and osteotomy. Dr. Schorfhaar is the Team Physician for the MSU Hockey and Swimming teams and Lansing Catholic Central High School.
Anthony L. Biggs, DO, Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellow, 2007-08
Dr. Biggs completed his undergraduate degree from Millikin University. He received his medical degree from Midwestern University, Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his family medicine residency at Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency in Illinois. Dr. Biggs is a certified Athletic Trainer. He completed several sports medicine rotations during his residency. Dr. Biggs is very excited to be part of a program where he can share in his passion and commitment to providing care to physically active individuals.
Michelle M. Brewer, DO, Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellow, 2007-08
She divides her time between MSU Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and MSU Sports Medicine. Dr. Brewer is a graduate of Okemos High School. She completed her undergraduate degree from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She received her medical degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Internship was completed at Botsford General Hospital and she completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Brewer is a former National Champion Baton Twirler. She is happy to be a member of the MSU Sports Medicine team where she continues to learn more about sport specific injuries and rehabilitation.
Jennifer M. Lyon, DO, Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellow, 2007-08
Dr. Lyon completed her undergraduate degree from Michigan State University. She received her medical degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her family medicine Residency at Sparrow Family Medicine residency program in Lansing, Michigan. Dr. Lyon completed a sports medicine rotation at Michigan State University Sports Medicine. She chose to attend medical school as a result of her lifelong history as a dancer and majored in Osteopathic Medicine to gain more knowledge about the human anatomy’s structure and function. Dr. Lyon is very excited to be part of a program where she can gain knowledge and experience in treating all sports related injuries.
